CHS is pleased to provide professional transportation to our students with buses starting and ending each day in Airway Heights (through Reardan), Davenport and Cheney (Medical Lake students can catch either the AWH or Cheney buses. All of our drivers meet or exceed state standards.

Christian Heritage Transportation Standards of Behavior

These rules and outcomes are intended to guide riders in safe ridership practices. Most bus crashes are due to distractions within the bus. Our school is dedicated to safety and to rider comfort.

A summation of the rules:

  • Respect others and our bus
  • Follow the 10 commandments
  • Legs must remain inside seats
  • Remain seated
  • Indoor voices at all times
  • Be on time
  • Hands inside windows
  • The aisle must remain clear
  • Eating and drinking is OK – clean up your own mess or you will clean the whole bus – use the waste basket
  • No hitting or inappropriate touching
  • No name calling, put downs or bad language
  • Do not distract the driver
  • K-3 riders sit in the front 4 rows of seats, 7-12th riders in the last rows as marked.
  • Sleds are permitted in the rear and under bus cargo bins
  • If crossing the street while boarding/departing the bus, always cross in front of the bus
  • When waiting for the bus stand at least 6 feet from where bus wheels will stop

Day to day minor problems will be handled informally by the driver. Should a rider choose to blatantly disrespect the behavior/safety standards of our bus, a written notice will be forwarded to bus/school administration and the following will occur:

  • First warning will result in a call to rider/parents.
  • Second warning will result in a parent/rider conference and 2 weeks in the front seat.
  • Third warning will cause rider to be suspended from bus ridership until the rider writes an apology to the driver, meets with school administrator and participates in a one hour counseling session. The rider will remain in the front seat for one month.
  • A fourth warning will result in ridership suspension for two weeks, two hours of counseling, completion of an essay, parent/rider meeting with school administrator, and a last chance written agreement to comply with behavior/safety rules.

These rules and outcomes are intended to support riders in appropriate behavior and that inappropriate activity will quickly cease, so that all on the bus may be appropriate and safe during travel. It is our goal that the driver keeps full attention on the road and isn’t distracted by behavior issues. Our riders and families are great and we hope no one needs to be warned more than once.

Transportation Questions and Answers

  1. We are late to the bus stop. Can the bus wait for us, should we call the driver, or should I chase the bus?
    • The bus needs to leave on time
    • The driver can’t take calls while on the bus
    • Follow at a safe distance to the next stop
  2. Can our student ride other bus routes?
    • No problem – please send a note to give to the driver
  3. Our son/daughter is staying home sick, should I call the driver?
    • No, just call the school and leave a message
  4. What if the bus is late?
    • Please wait – the bus will come.  If there has been a breakdown, we will attempt to call someone at the stops.
  5. How about weather problems?
    • Delay and school closures are broadcast through direct/automated phone or email notification, major TV and radio media by 6:15 am in most cases.  Late breaking weather may result in a later decision.
  6. Will someone make sure my son/daughter gets on the bus after school?
    • The after school bus leaves promptly at 3:10. K-2nd graders are escorted to the bus, other students are responsible to get to the bus on time.
    • Students left behind will be kept safely in the library and parents/contacts will be notified.
  7. How about bus safety?
    • School buses are statistically the safest over the road of any mode of transportation
    • Washington state bus safety officials do not recommend seat belts for regular riders.  We are exploring adding seat belts to the front few rows for smaller children.
    • Drivers are licensed and tested by the state, receive in-service training including first aid/CPR and have regular drug testing.
    • All vehicles are serviced and inspected by commercial garages and mechanics
  8. Can I ride the bus to school with my son/daughter?
    • Parents are always welcome, we ask that you park safely near a bus stop (To join the Davenport bus you will need to board prior to the weigh station transfer point, as there is no parking at the weigh station)
  9. I will be late picking up my child or won’t be at home after school.  What do I do?
    • Call the school as soon as possible and communicate your plan – friend's house, walk home, etc.  If possible, the driver will be notified prior to their departure.  Remember, the driver can’t take calls or alter the route.

The safety of our students is our number one priority.  Your input is valued.  Let us know how we are doing.
